If you want to be great at no-gi… simple answer is train no-gi, if you want to have a great gi game, train with a gi. The concepts are vastly different between the two, something most people don`t understand. They share similar techniques, but getting to them are different.
@Trigunflame Sorry, but “Useless” is too strong of a word in my opinion. A lot of good guys (e.g. Lyoto and Nogueira) still train with a Gi every now and then and do feel its helpful.
My point is – doing throws using the Gi’s like he’s doing in this video is Useless in MMA – because they don’t wear one. The whole reason they eliminated it from MMA is because of it’s using for easier chokes and breaking fingers/joints etc.
As for Lyoto & Nogueira – so what? There are far more MMA fighters that train Gi’less than with. 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu for example..(Eddie Bravo) many MMA fighters utilize that system because it’s more applicable to their craft.
I get it: No, I meant that Swick lost to an asshole (Dan Hardy) the last fight he had, I didn’t mean Thiago was an asshole. He seams like a really together person.
Training with a Gi (which involve a whole variety of techniques that are inapplicable without you or the opponent wearing one) for MMA is akin to a pro boxer training judo. It doesn’t make sense.

I don’t think Thiago is an asshole, at all. I think he’s a good fighter who’s going to really put it to Swick… but I kinda want Swick to win.

BOPE is no joke you have to be elite to get into that squad, watch a movie called Tropa De Elite (Elite Squad). BOPE do anything to catch bad guys, they bag peoples faces, interrogate, rough up and take people out, they are above the Police and pretty much anything else in Brazil. Wouldnt wanna fuck with Thiago he is tough.
Lyoto and Nogueira say that trainning with a Gi provides you a slower and tighter train, which alows you to do things more toughtfully and improve your game
